Home / Deb’s Desk / The curse of the quick click
No, this isn’t a rehash of a Harry Potter novel; however, we are seeing businesses, particularly those in the B2B space, fall victim to the curse of the quick click. What is the quick click? I’m sure you or your marketing team have received emails informing you that “We guarantee you first page on Google.”
These automated emails landing in your inbox should raise eyebrows. We get them, often up to 10 a week. The irony isn’t lost on us. Brilliant Digital is a full-service digital marketing agency with specialist SEO strategists, analytics experts, content specialists, and web developers. Yet we receive generic emails warning that our website has “critical SEO problems” or claiming our competitors are leaving us behind. Some even include the obvious cut-and-paste line:
“After reviewing your website…” It’s clear they haven’t.
These emails represent a mass email blast to as many email addresses as they can buy. Sadly, they can and do trigger a few sales. Those who bite often get bitten. Importantly, they highlight one of the biggest problems in modern digital marketing. Too many agencies are still selling tactics instead of strategy.
“Too many agencies are still selling tactics instead of strategy. Those who bite often get bitten.”
These generic marketing agencies can do what they say. They are programmed to get you listed on page one of Google. It will be expensive, but it will happen. Apart from the cost, the primary issue is that they build their entire sales proposition around a single metric. More clicks, more traffic, higher Google ranking. These results look great on paper and do have a place, but they rarely translate into business growth. Generic marketing agencies often optimise for the easiest wins rather than the most valuable outcomes. They chase high-volume keywords, broad audiences and vanity metrics. The reports look amazing, and the dashboards have a series of upward-trending charts; however, there is little commercial impact. A thousand visitors who have no intention of becoming customers are worth far less than twenty decision-makers who genuinely need your expertise.
The days of digital marketing being solely a numbers game are long gone.
Brilliant Digital is a B2B specialist marketing agency. While we do have a number of B2C clients, our legacy sits in the business-to-business domain. Our experience over the past 15 years clearly shows that business purchasing decisions differ greatly from that of B2C behaviour. Rarely does a managing director, procurement manager, or executive team discover a supplier, visit a single webpage, and make an immediate enquiry. Instead, they research, compare, and validate through evidence. They read case studies, review credentials and assess expertise.
They will visit your website multiple times over several weeks or even months before making contact. They not only research on Google but also employ AI platforms as part of the process. By the time someone submits an enquiry, they’ve already formed an opinion about your business long before speaking to your sales team. Every digital interaction contributes to that decision.
These enquiries are qualified leads, not tyre kickers sending multiple enquiries. They’ve taken their time and narrowed down their choices before hitting send. Quality over quantity saves you and them time and leads to higher conversion.
Digital marketing should never be a stable of separate disciplines. We see it too often. SEO is handled by one supplier; the website was built by someone else. Social media is handled internally, and email marketing is done occasionally. Fresh content is loaded when someone has the time or is reacting to an event, and advertising only appears when sales slow down. The problem here is that the disciplines are not strategically connected. This is another curse of the quick click. The numbers look good, but the campaigns don’t support each other.
The businesses that outperform their competitors don’t rely on isolated marketing tactics. They build digital ecosystems that work together. Each component supports the next. Their brand positioning shapes website messaging while educational content improves search visibility and authority. Search either via Google or AI platforms introduces your customers, email marketing nurtures the relationships, and case studies provide proof. Critically, analytics identify what’s genuinely influencing commercial outcomes.
When these elements work as part of an integrated system, business owners don’t ask, “How many clicks did we receive this month?” They’re asking far more valuable questions.
That’s the difference between activity and strategy, and this is the way businesses get ahead of the competition.
As I mentioned at the top, ranking on Google is important. The emergence of AI means you must rank for the right reasons. Some of AI’s influences are hard to work with; however, for businesses invested in the long game and who value their reputations as leaders in their fields, AI can be your greatest ally in marketing.
AI search is at the forefront of changes in consumer behaviour, quickly dominating how people search for products and services. The biggest shift is that AI search platforms don’t reward businesses for keyword stuffing or superficial optimisation. They reward expertise. They favour organisations that produce genuinely useful content, answer real customer questions, and showcase authority within their industry. This is another red flag for the quick click volume tactics of generic agencies. They can’t win in the AI space.
Businesses that invest in professional educational content, thought leadership and utilise a well-structured website find themselves better positioned for traditional search engines and AI search experiences.
In many ways, AI has reinforced what effective marketing should have been doing all along.
Naturally, I will encourage clients to avoid the curse of the quick click. These agencies do win work, and often we see the carnage left behind. The fact is, digital marketing has never been short of trends and every year there’s another shiny object promising to transform business growth. Some become valuable marketing channels, such as AI search, and many disappear with little to show for their time. Unfortunately, businesses that continually chase the latest tactic will spend significant time and budget without creating any long-term commercial value.
B2B organisations that understand that marketing is about creating trust, not generating clicks, are winning the long game.

Successful B2B marketing focuses on attracting qualified decision-makers rather than simply increasing website traffic or search rankings.
SEO, content, websites, email marketing, analytics and AI optimisation deliver the best results when they work together as an integrated marketing ecosystem.
Businesses that consistently publish high-quality educational content and demonstrate genuine industry knowledge are better positioned in both traditional and AI search.
B2B organisations that invest in building credibility, authority and meaningful customer relationships achieve stronger commercial outcomes than those chasing short-term marketing trends
The “curse of the quick click” refers to focusing on vanity metrics such as website traffic and Google rankings instead of generating qualified leads and real business growth. While clicks have value, they don’t automatically translate into customers.
A high Google ranking is only valuable if it attracts the right audience. For B2B organisations, attracting a small number of qualified decision-makers is often far more profitable than generating large volumes of untargeted traffic.
B2B buyers typically undertake extensive research before making contact, often visiting a website multiple times, reading case studies and validating expertise. Purchasing decisions are generally longer, more considered and involve multiple stakeholders.
A digital marketing ecosystem is an integrated strategy in which your website, SEO, content, email marketing, social media, analytics, and advertising work together. Rather than operating in isolation, each channel supports the customer journey and contributes to measurable business outcomes.
AI search platforms increasingly reward genuine expertise, authoritative content and websites that answer real customer questions. Businesses investing in educational content and thought leadership are better positioned for both traditional search engines and AI-powered search experiences.
Metrics such as clicks, impressions and rankings can look impressive but don’t necessarily generate revenue. More meaningful measures include qualified enquiries, customer engagement, lead quality, and the influence of marketing on purchasing decisions.
Brilliant Digital develops integrated digital marketing strategies rather than isolated campaigns. By combining SEO, content marketing, website development, analytics, AI search optimisation and lead nurturing, the team builds marketing ecosystems that generate qualified commercial opportunities.
Brilliant Digital reviews your entire digital presence to identify where disconnected marketing activities are limiting performance. The team then develops a cohesive strategy focused on building authority, improving customer journeys and delivering measurable business growth across both traditional and AI search.
